MAUKA TO MAKAI

This piece of art is our expression of majestic mount Haleakala, Upcountry all the way down to the ocean. Hawaiians understand the relationship that exists between the mountain and the ocean. In Hawaiian, MAUKA means on the mountain side of the road, inland or upland, and MAKAI refers on the ocean side of the road.

Yet, in spite of the distance that separates the two, each greatly influence the other: The seawater evaporates into clouds and the moisture falls from the sky, in the form of mist or rain, to nourish the mountains vegetation. In turn the seeds and other plants from the uplands run off into the water shed and provide life- sustaining nutrients to the ocean and its inhabitants. Hence the cycle is complete!
